The first hotel in Milan with zero emissions makes its debut
The first totally eco-friendly hotel in Milan will be located in the vicinity of La Scala theatre.
Hotel Milano Scala is the result of the wise restoration of a nineteenth-century building in one of the main streets in Milan, via dell’Orso, for which the innovative HWS & ATW Mitsubishi Electric ststems were chosen to provide air conditioning and heat recovery based hot water systems that run without emitting any pollutants into the atmosphere.
The HWS & ATW system is part of the Mitsubishi Electric Line Systems dedicated to large plant systems. This excellent system offers the hotel, home real estate and servicing sectors a complete product, with electricity as the sole source of power. The system, in fact, recovers the energy used to generate air conditioning and uses it to produce domestic hot water (bathrooms, pools, spa, restaurants) and for heating purposes (floor or radiators), without this operation involving the production of CO2. Mitsubishi Electric has expanded and enhanced its range of VRF systems introducing "a inverter" technology, thanks to which the systems only deliver the power needed to meet the requirements of any building. The efficacy of these systems means there is no waste of energy, cooling or heating zones excessively, which obviously translates into a significant decrease in operating costs. The alternative systems, apparently more economical, do in fact incur higher operating costs.
The hotel will make use energy suppliers who only use clean and renewable sources. This combination allows the hotel to use energy without emitting pollutants both locally (the hotel has no boiler, even to heat domestic hot water) and globally. Mitsubishi Electric technology will, therefore, generate a considerable decrease in costs and emissions into the environment: it has been calculated that this will lead to an annual energy savings of 45% compared to conventional systems and a reduction of CO2 emissions amounting to 417.5 tons. In heating mode, VRF systems do actually yield an efficiency level which is nearly four times higher than that of combustion systems.
The innovative HWS & ATW system ensures total comfort: in winter, VRF systems provide heating via the underfloor system radiating panels or via indoor units, while in summer the very same units are used to cool and dehumidify the same zones At the same time, it is also possible to produce hot domestic water, at no additional cost, thanks to the heat recovered via the hydronic modules. Even in spring and autumn, it is possible to meet the wide range of requirements throughout the day, instantly modulating the delivery of cold and hot air.
The project is particularly innovative because the hotel is located in a historic building in the heart of the Brera district, where it would not be possible to capture enough energy from solar or wind power plants.
